Day 1: Suoi Thau Plateau – Ban Phung Village
Hoang Su Phi is about 300 km from Hanoi, usually a five-hour drive. However, due to ongoing road repairs between Tan Quang and Hoang Su Phi, travelers should take the Hanoi – Lao Cai Expressway, then detour via Bac Ha to reach Hoang Su Phi. Although this route is roughly 80 km longer, it’s more convenient.
Lunch can be enjoyed in Pho Lu (Bao Thang District, Lao Cai), which offers various dining options like Hieu Giap and Hai Huyen restaurants, featuring dishes such as black chicken soup, roasted hill pork, and grilled river fish.
After lunch, continue toward Xin Man town and stop at the Suoi Thau Plateau, located in Coc Pai town. In the past two years, Suoi Thau has become a popular destination, often compared to a miniature Switzerland for its peaceful and poetic landscape. Each season brings different hues — yellow mustard flowers in spring, lush green maize and rice in summer, and white-pink buckwheat blossoms in fall.
Spend the night in Ban Phung, home to some of the most stunning terraced rice fields in Hoang Su Phi and a must-visit location in Ha Giang. Located about 30 km from Hoang Su Phi’s center, Ban Phung is home to the La Chi ethnic group, who have preserved many of their rich cultural traditions. Dinner is a communal meal with locals. Don't miss out on the unique buffalo horn wine-drinking ritual, a traditional La Chi cultural practice during festivals, especially during Khu Cu Te Festival (7th lunar month).

Day 2: Exploring the Beauty of Ban Phung
Dawn is the most magical time in Ban Phung. Wake around 5 AM to enjoy the sea of clouds floating above golden terraces in the fresh mountain air.
After breakfast, take a walk or ride a motorbike into Na Leng Hamlet to visit the "Heart of Ban Phung" viewpoint. Along the way, learn about the unique culture and daily life of the La Chi people.
Next, head to Ban Luoc, one of Hoang Su Phi's top three spots for terraced rice fields (after Ban Phung). Have lunch at a restaurant offering a panoramic view of the fields. A must-try dish here is carp raised in the rice paddies. In the afternoon, ascend Chieu Lau Thi Mountain (2,402 m), considered the “muse” of the Tay Con Linh range. Located in Ho Thau commune, the summit is now reachable by car or motorbike via a newly paved road.

Activity: Fullday Trekking
Accommodation: In Ecolodge

Trekking distance: 8 – 12 Km
Day 3: Cloud-Hunting on Chieu Lau Thi
No visit to Chieu Lau Thi is complete without cloud-hunting. From Uncle Phu’s homestay, it’s a short 1 km ride to the starting point, followed by a 30–40-minute trek (thanks to new steps installed).
Bring water and snacks for the climb. After returning, enjoy breakfast at the homestay.
In the highlands of Hoang Su Phi and northern Vietnam in general, travel times between destinations can be long. Be sure to rest adequately between stops to keep your energy up.
Continue on to Thong Nguyen Commune. Stop for lunch at a homestay at the base of Ho Thau Mountain, such as Long Chieu or Ho Thau Eco Village. These family-run lodges serve homegrown meals — no market shopping needed. Expect smoked meats, mountain vegetables, and herbal greens. Thong Nguyen is known for its Nam Khoa “tray-shaped” rice terraces, especially beautiful at sunset. The Dao ethnic group makes up most of the population in Nam Hong and Nam Khoa. Community-based tourism is well-developed here, offering high-quality eco-friendly lodging like Hoang Su Phi Bungalow, Hoang Su Phi Lodge, and Binh Minh Homestay. Full meal service is available, and don’t miss out on another Dao herbal bath to recover from a full day of trekking.

Day 4: Sunrise at Nam Hong’s Horseshoe Terraces
At Nam Hong, you don’t need to chase the sunrise — it appears right outside your room window. Enjoy breakfast while watching clouds slowly drift across the valley.
A must-do activity during the golden season is catching rice paddy carp and enjoying various fish-based dishes. The integrated fish-rice farming method is a sustainable cycle: fish eat pests and weeds, stir the mud, and fertilize the rice, while leftover rice and straw become fish feed. The fish are especially tender and flavorful. Popular dishes include: grilled carp, sour carp soup, and crispy fried carp.
Wrap up the journey by traveling from Thong Nguyen through Xuan Minh to National Highway 279, then connect to Highway 2 via Viet Quang and Bac Quang to return to Hanoi.
