After a refreshing breakfast to recharge your energy, we embark on the Northern Laos loop cycling tour, one of the most scenic and challenging routes in Southeast Asia.
We set off from the hotel and cycle gently on the asphalt road out of the city. After this initial stretch, we quickly encounter the first challenge: a tough series of uphill climbs. Welcome to another exciting day on your 12-day Northern Laos cycling tour. Today’s ride is set to be another challenging yet incredibly rewarding adventure. We begin our journey from Phou Khoun, cycling through remote villages and rugged landscapes towards Muang Souy, situated near the famous Plain of Jars. The further we venture, the more the natural beauty of Laos reveals itself, with the landscape becoming more raw and rugged as we pedal along.
As you cycle towards the Plain of Jars, one of Laos' most iconic archaeological sites, the terrain changes, but the challenging climbs continue. You’ll ride through an area that is historically significant, with the legendary Plain of Jars lying nearby. Known for its mysterious stone jars scattered across the plain, this UNESCO-listed site is one of Southeast Asia's most unique landmarks, adding historical intrigue to the day’s ride. The Plain of Jars itself remains a symbol of the ancient and enigmatic cultures of Laos, and while you may not visit the site today, its presence looms large in the backdrop of your journey.
As you cycle through the winding mountain roads, the beauty of the Panoramic mountain views will keep you motivated. The sheer mountain pinnacles that rise majestically above the verdant valleys create a stunning contrast against the sky. The altitude and the terrain offer breathtaking vistas that showcase the best of Northern Laos' untouched nature. With every pedal stroke, you'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of towering peaks, lush forests, and distant hilltop villages.
Throughout the ride, you’ll encounter traditional hill tribe communities, such as the H’mong and Khmu, who have lived in harmony with the mountainous landscape for generations. Day 04: Muang Souy to Phonsavan – Cycling Adventure through History and Culture

On Day 04 of your thrilling 12-day cycling tour in Northern Laos, prepare for a more relaxed ride as we head toward Phonsavan, the capital district of Xiangkhuang Province. After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we begin our journey by cycling through the serene landscapes that define Northern Laos. Today's ride is a gentle continuation of our adventure, but it’s a day packed with both scenic beauty and rich cultural experiences, especially as we explore one of the most historically significant regions of Laos.
Our route takes us from Muang Souy, a remote and picturesque village, as we cycle toward the town of Phonsavan. The ride is relatively short, providing a welcome break from the more intense climbs of previous days, but the landscapes remain breathtaking. You'll be riding through peaceful rural areas with lush green valleys and scattered villages, where life continues at a slower pace, offering a great opportunity to observe the local culture of the H’mong, Khmu, and other ethnic communities.
One of the highlights of today’s journey is a visit to the Plain of Jars, one of Laos' most mysterious and awe-inspiring archaeological sites. As we cycle off the main road, we will make our way to Site 1 and Site 2 of the Plain of Jars, famous for its ancient stone jars scattered across the plateau. This archaeological enigma has intrigued historians, archaeologists, and travelers alike for centuries, with theories ranging from ritual burial practices to storage of food or wine, as local legend suggests.
At Site 1, you’ll have the chance to get up close to the massive jars, some of which stand over 3 meters tall, made from stone and scattered across the plateau. The exact purpose of the jars remains unclear, but what is certain is their cultural significance. Estimated to be over 2,500 to 3,000 years old, these ancient relics have been left behind by an unknown civilization and are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage candidate site.
Despite ongoing research, many of the other jar sites remain unexplored, as they are overgrown with thick jungle and still contaminated with UXOs (unexploded ordnance), remnants from the Indo-China War. The history surrounding the UXO contamination is a grim reminder of Laos' tumultuous past. Between 1964 and 1973, Laos became one of the most heavily bombed countries in the world, with large areas still suffering from the impacts of unexploded bombs. Visiting the Plain of Jars is not only an exploration of an ancient mystery but also a somber reflection on the region’s more recent history.
After a fulfilling visit to the Plain of Jars, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can savor delicious Laotian food while reflecting on the morning’s experiences. Following lunch, we cycle the remaining distance to Phonsavan, the capital of Xiangkhuang Province. Phonsavan, a small and quiet town, holds significant historical importance. During the Indo-China War, this region became a battlefield between the Lao communist government and the royal government from 1964 to 1973, resulting in the town’s transformation into a strategic and contested area.
After arriving in Phonsavan, we check into our hotel and give you some free time to explore this charming town. We highly recommend a visit to the UXO Visitor Center, where you can learn more about the devastating impact of unexploded ordnance in Laos and the ongoing efforts for UXO clearance. The center provides a deeper understanding of the region’s history, the people affected by the bombings, and the path to recovery.
After a day of cycling through Laos’ scenic landscapes and historic sites, we end our journey in Phonsavan, where you can rest and reflect on the many stories this region has to offer. The town’s peaceful atmosphere offers a welcome contrast to the intense history that surrounds it. Stay overnight at your hotel in Phonsavan, allowing you to recharge for another exciting day ahead.
Today’s ride, although shorter, combines the best of cycling in Laos with a deep dive into the country’s ancient heritage and tragic history, making it an unforgettable part of your Northern Laos cycling tour. Whether you’re exploring the enigmatic Plain of Jars, learning about the UXO challenges, or simply cycling through the picturesque countryside, this day offers an incredible blend ofadventure, history, and culture.

Day 05: Phonsavan to Muangkham – A Day of Scenic Cycling and Historical Reflection

On Day 05 of your 12-day cycling tour through Northern Laos, we begin with a leisurely ride, giving you a chance to recover from the previous day's more challenging routes. There's no rush to start early today as we cycle at a more relaxed pace, making our way toward the small town of Muangkham. This is a day of rich cultural experiences, scenic views, and poignant moments that connect you with the history of Laos and its resilient people.
Cycling Through Hmong Villages and Picturesque Rice Fields
After breakfast, we begin cycling towards Muangkham, turning right in the direction of the Vietnam border. As we ride, we pass through the serene landscapes of Hmong villages, where you'll have the chance to see the traditional highland life of the Hmong people, one of the largest ethnic minorities in Laos. These villages, perched on the mountainsides, offer a rare glimpse into the customs and way of life of the highland communities. The unique homes, the people’s traditional attire, and the vibrant culture of these villages provide a deep connection to the rural heart of Northern Laos.
As we cycle through these picturesque settings, you’ll be treated to scenic views of lush rice paddies that stretch across the valleys. The fields are a patchwork of green, especially during the rice-growing season, creating a landscape that is both stunning and tranquil. Be sure to stop for photographs, capturing the beauty of the Laotian countryside, the intricate terraced rice fields, and the backdrop of towering mountain peaks.
The terrain on today’s route is not overly demanding, with gentle ascents and descents along rolling hills. While the road winds up and down, the ride remains manageable, offering a comfortable pace to enjoy the surroundings. The calm and rhythmic nature of today’s ride allows you to truly take in the beauty of Laos, making this an ideal day for a relaxing but fulfilling cycling experience.
In the afternoon, we arrive at Muangkham, a small, peaceful town in the Xieng Khouang province. However, beneath the surface of this serene town lies a poignant piece of Laos' history. Optional, but highly recommended, is a visit to a local cave near Muangkham, which holds significant historical importance. During the Indochina War, the cave served as a shelter for more than 300 villagers seeking refuge from the bombing raids. Tragically, the cave was hit by a Napalm bomb from the Royal Lao Air Force, resulting in the death of many innocent lives.
This site is a solemn reminder of the impacts of the war and the incredible resilience of the Laotian people. Visiting the cave offers a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by the villagers during the war and the lasting effects of the UXO contamination in Laos. It is a moment of reflection and respect, offering insight into a chapter of history that is rarely told in mainstream accounts.
After the visit to the cave, we return to Muangkham, where we check into a guesthouse for the night. This peaceful town, away from the tourist crowds, offers a quiet retreat, allowing you to relax after a day of cycling and reflection. For dinner, we’ll dine at a local restaurant, savoring authentic Laotian cuisine and enjoying the warmth of the town’s hospitality.
Today’s ride may have been short, but it was filled with unforgettable moments—cycling through Hmong villages, experiencing the natural beauty of Laos, and reflecting on the profound history that shaped this remarkable country. This day serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Laotian people, as well as the importance of understanding their past while cycling through one of the world’s most stunning and culturally rich regions. This portion of the Northern Laos cycling tour gives you the chance to connect with the land and people, as well as to reflect on the history that makes Laos a unique destination. From the peaceful landscapes of Muangkham to the historical significance of the cave, Day 05 is a day that blends culture, history, and cycling adventure in a truly meaningful way.

The roads are winding, and the descent allows you to pick up some speed and enjoy a sense of freedom as you ride through the lush, green landscape below.
After the exhilarating downhill ride, we encounter another shorter climb. While the ascent is less demanding than the previous one, it still provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the surrounding landscapes and the beauty of the Laotian countryside. We take our time and pace ourselves, knowing that the next part of the journey will be just as rewarding.
Our guide will bring along a picnic lunch, which we will stop to enjoy when we begin to feel hungry. The peaceful surroundings of this remote region make the perfect setting for a relaxing lunch break, where you can enjoy the fresh air, chat with fellow cyclists, and take in the beauty of the nature around you.
The last section of today’s cycling journey is a thrilling 20 km descent. From an altitude of 1400 meters, we descend to 500 meters above sea level, enjoying one final, long downhill stretch. As we descend toward the valley below, the scenery continues to impress, with steep cliffs, dense jungles, and scattered villages lining the route.
Finally, we reach our destination for the night: the peaceful village of Namneuan. After breakfast, prepared by our guide at a local restaurant, we set off for a day that blends both challenging climbs and peaceful descents, offering a perfect balance of adventure and cultural exploration.
Our day begins with a big climb as we leave Namneuan and start the ride toward Xiengthong. The winding roads take us through lush forests, and we ride in the cool morning air, feeling the quiet isolation of Northern Laos as we ascend.
Once we reach the summit of this climb, we cycle along the quiet, undisturbed roads that pass through remote hill tribe villages. These villages are home to Hmong and other ethnic minorities, and we take the opportunity to stop along the way to interact with the local people. The hill tribe communities here still follow traditional lifestyles, working in their rice fields, growing crops, and living in stilt houses. It's a truly authentic experience, offering a glimpse into rural life in Laos that many travelers rarely see. As foreigners, we are often greeted with curiosity by the locals, who are amazed to see us cycling such long distances on their quiet roads.
The cultural exchange with these communities adds a rich layer to the day, allowing us to experience Laos' cultural diversity while cycling through its natural beauty. The local way of life, largely unchanged for generations, is a fascinating contrast to the rapidly developing cities of Southeast Asia.
After completing the first climb, we enjoy a long downhill ride, descending to the valley below. The road then continues with a series of rolling hills, providing more gentle climbs and descents as we make our way toward Xiengthong. As we approach the town of Xiengthong, we make our way toward the final 18 km downhill, where we cruise down into the valley, enjoying the cool breeze and stunning scenery around us. The ride is relaxing but still offers plenty of opportunities to take in the beauty of the landscape as we approach our destination for the night.
After an exhilarating and rewarding day of cycling, we arrive in Xiengthong, a peaceful town set on the banks of the Nam Khan River. This small town is a tranquil haven, home to several hill tribe communities, including the Hmong and lowland Lao people. Xiengthong is largely off the beaten path, giving you the chance to experience authentic Laos culture in an untouched setting.
After checking into our guesthouse, take some time to freshen up and relax before heading out for a soothing dip at the nearby hot springs. The warm waters are the perfect remedy for sore legs after a day of cycling, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the serene surroundings.
After your time at the hot springs, explore the town of Xiengthong at your leisure. Stroll through the quiet streets, visit the local markets, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote town. The Nam Khan River adds to the town’s charm, with its slow-moving waters and scenic backdrop of hills and valleys. The town is home to a fascinating blend of ethnic groups, and its people are welcoming, offering a chance to learn more about the rich cultural heritage of Northern Laos. For dinner, we will enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, where you can savor traditional Laotian cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients. The food in Xiengthong is typically simple but flavorful, with rice, fresh vegetables, and meats often forming the basis of the dishes. We will then retire for the night in a comfortable guesthouse, where you can rest after a challenging but fulfilling day. The peaceful surroundings of Xiengthong make it a perfect place to unwind, enjoy the evening, and reflect on the day’s ride.
Day 07 of your Northern Laos cycling tour offers the perfect combination of physical challenge and cultural exploration. Day 08: Nam Neun to Ban That Hium (Vieng Thong Muang Hiam) – Conquer the Laotian Alps

On Day 08 of your 12-day Laos cycling tour, prepare for one of the most physically demanding yet incredibly rewarding days of the journey as you tackle the Laotian Alps. This long day of cycling will challenge your endurance, but it will also offer some of the most breathtaking views of the mountain landscapes and remote villages in Northern Laos.
Start your day early as the sunrise brings the vibrant activity of the local hill tribe market right outside our hotel. The market is bustling with energy, offering a variety of traditional goods, local produce, and handicrafts. As you wander through the market, you’ll get a glimpse of the local way of life, interacting with ethnic minority communities who rely on these markets to trade goods and produce.
After browsing the market and experiencing the local atmosphere, we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast  before setting off for the day’s ride.
The first leg of today’s ride takes us on gravel roads that wind through the mountainous terrain near the Vietnamese border. The quiet roads are flanked by towering peaks and dense forests, and we begin with a 5 km climb, gradually making our way higher into the mountain passes. The rough gravel roads will challenge your cycling skills, but the reward is the stunning views of the Laotian Alps that unfold around you as you climb.
Once we reach the top, we’ll join Road 1C, where we’re greeted by a short but steep downhill ride. This brief descent offers some relief for our tired legs and gives us a moment to appreciate the beauty of the landscape as we coast through the mountain valleys.
After the short downhill, the cycling becomes more challenging. We’ll face a tough and relentless 35 km uphill climb as we push through one of the most difficult sections of the trip. The uphill cycling takes us through rugged mountain roads, where we’ll encounter few signs of civilization. The road is isolated, and the mountain air is thin, making the ascent physically demanding.
However, the climb is worth every bit of effort. As we push forward, we’re rewarded with panoramic views of the Laotian Alps, with their towering limestone peaks and lush valleys. These mountain landscapes are untouched and pristine, providing an awe-inspiring backdrop to the challenge of the ride.
Throughout the climb, we’ll pass through several hill tribe villages, offering opportunities to stop, interact with the locals, and gain insight into the traditional ways of life in Northern Laos. The hill tribe people are friendly and welcoming, often seen working in their fields or tending to livestock, and they make this experience even more enriching.
After a demanding day of cycling uphill, the 15 km downhill stretch to Muang Vieng Thong (also known as Muang Hiam) will feel like a welcome reprieve. The descent is long and thrilling, offering sweeping views of the valleys and river systems below. The roads twist and wind through dense forests, past remote settlements, and alongside lush green landscapes.
As we descend into the town of Muang Vieng Thong, the scenery becomes even more picturesque, with the surrounding mountains offering a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Muang Vieng Thong is a quiet, rural town where we’ll stay overnight, and its peaceful environment is perfect for unwinding after a challenging day of cycling.
After our arrival in Muang Vieng Thong, we’ll have the chance to relax, freshen up, and enjoy the serene surroundings. The town is known for its beautiful scenery, and you can take some time to explore the area at your own pace. Muang Vieng Thong is home to several ethnic communities, and the local culture is a blend of Hmong, Khmu, and other ethnic groups that call this region home.
For those interested in learning more about the local way of life, a stroll through the town will reveal traditional stilt houses, bustling local markets, and the opportunity to interact with the people who live here. Ethnic minority villages are scattered around the town, and you may encounter locals working in rice fields, tending to animals, or weaving traditional textiles.
Dinner will be served at a local restaurant, where you can savor traditional Laotian cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients. The food in Muang Vieng Thong typically includes a mix of rice, vegetables, meats, and spices, and it offers a unique insight into the culinary traditions of the ethnic groups that inhabit this region. We’ll stay overnight at a comfortable guesthouse, where you can rest and recover from the day’s cycling adventure. The tranquil surroundings of Muang Vieng Thong provide the perfect setting to unwind and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

After the climb, we will be rewarded with a pleasant downhill ride that winds through the lush landscapes of Laos. The route takes us deep into a densely forested area within the National Biodiversity Conservation Area, a protected zone that is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. The forested landscape is peaceful and tranquil, with towering trees and a variety of wildlife.
As we cycle through these remote areas, we’ll pass through small villages that are rarely visited by tourists. These hidden villages are filled with local Lao communities, offering us a chance to experience authentic rural Laos life. The people are friendly and welcoming, often seen working in rice fields, tending to animals, or weaving traditional textiles. The opportunity to interact with these communities and learn about their way of life is a unique highlight of the day.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue our journey with another downhill ride, offering us sweeping views of the mountain valleys below. The descent is smooth and scenic, as we make our way toward Vieng Kham, a small rural settlement located just beyond Pak Xeng. The final stretch of the ride provides a peaceful and calming atmosphere, perfect for reflecting on the day’s journey.
Upon arrival in Vieng Kham, we’ll check in to our guesthouse and have time to relax and freshen up. Vieng Kham is a quiet town that offers a peaceful stop on our journey through Northern Laos. It’s an excellent opportunity to unwind and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of this rural area.
After a day of cycling, we’ll enjoy a delicious local dinner at a nearby restaurant, where you can taste traditional Laotian cuisine made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The food here often includes sticky rice, vegetables, and a variety of meats, all prepared with fragrant herbs and spices that reflect the culinary traditions of Northern Laos.
If time permits, take a brief stroll around Vieng Kham, exploring the local culture and enjoying the serene atmosphere of this rural town. The peaceful streets are lined with traditional Lao houses, and you may encounter local villagers going about their daily routines.
Day 09 is a day of cycling through some of the most scenic and remote parts of Laos, with a mix of gentle climbs, rewarding descents, and breathtaking views. Day 10: Vieng Kham to Nong Khiaw – Cycling Adventure through Northern Laos

In Day 10 of your 12-day Laos cycling tour, prepare for a day filled with diverse emotions and stunning landscapes as we embark on a challenging yet rewarding ride toward Nong Khiaw, one of the most scenic towns in Northern Laos. This leg of the journey offers a mix of hilly climbs, scenic descents, and a breathtaking arrival, all framed by the majestic mountain views and peaceful rural landscapes that make this part of Laos so unforgettable.
We begin our day with another hilly ride as we continue our journey toward Nong Khiaw. As we cycle through remote mountain roads, the route offers sweeping vistas of lush valleys, terraced rice fields, and rugged limestone peaks that seem to rise from the ground in dramatic formations. The challenging terrain gives us the opportunity to truly immerse ourselves in the beauty of Northern Laos, cycling through remote hill tribe villages and unspoiled wilderness. Along the way, we may encounter local communities, giving us the chance to see the traditional lifestyles of the ethnic minorities that call this area home.
The cycling will test our endurance as we make our way up and down hills, but the views along the way are more than worth the effort. As we ride, the stunning mountain scenery and the lush green surroundings are a constant reminder of the beauty and tranquility of this corner of the world. The rural Lao life that we encounter provides a glimpse into a slower, more peaceful way of living, with rice paddies stretching across the landscape and farmers working the fields.
As we approach Nong Khiaw, we’re rewarded with a scenic downhill ride that leads us into the picturesque town nestled along the Nam Ou River. Nong Khiaw is famous for its incredible landscapes, surrounded by dramatic limestone karsts and lush forests. The town is a peaceful escape and offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.
Upon arrival in Nong Khiaw, we’ll check in to our riverside hotel, where we can rest and unwind after the day’s cycling. The hotel’s location offers stunning views of the river and the surrounding mountains, creating a tranquil atmosphere that makes it an ideal place to relax and recover.  After settling into our accommodations, we can take a leisurely walk up to a magnificent viewpoint to get a panoramic view of Nong Khiaw and its stunning surroundings. The view from the top is truly breathtaking, with the winding river and towering karsts providing a dramatic backdrop to the small town below.
In the evening, we can return to the hotel and relax in the scenic surroundings. Treat yourself to a coconut pancake or a Laotian cocktail, such as the famous Lao Lao (rice whiskey), while reflecting on the day’s ride and the natural beauty of Northern Laos.  Unfortunately, it’s important to note that an ongoing programme of dam building in the area may soon change the landscape of this tranquil region.
