Day 18: Dong Van – Meo Vac – Khau Vai – Bao Lac | Conquer Ma Pi Leng Pass & Cross the Nho Que by Bamboo Raft

Today’s adventure promises one of the most awe-inspiring rides in Northern Vietnam. We begin our journey from the mountain town of Dong Van, cycling along a narrow cliffside road that leads to the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass—often called the "King of Vietnam’s mountain passes."
This world-famous road cuts across the towering Dong Van Karst Plateau, offering breathtaking panoramic views over deep gorges and the emerald waters of the Nho Que River far below. From an elevation of 1,500 meters, every curve reveals jaw-dropping landscapes, vertical cliffs, and peaceful minority villages nestled on high mountain slopes.
As we roll into Meo Vac, we gear up for an exhilarating off-the-beaten-path cycling experience. Here, we say goodbye to our support vehicle and begin a remote, unsupported ride—a true backcountry adventure! We’ll cross the Nho Que River on a traditional bamboo raft, linking two of the most untouched regions in the far north: Meo Vac and Bao Lac.
With no vehicle support today, we recommend packing energy bars and hydration drinks in your daypack. The trail ahead demands grit, but rewards with raw beauty and cultural encounters you won’t find on any ordinary tour. From the river, we continue along a challenging, winding concrete road that hugs the hillsides and skirts the valleys, eventually bringing us to the Khau Vai Stone Maze Village—a surreal landscape of limestone spires and ancient rock formations. The views here are magnificent, with the dramatic mountains framing the vibrant green waters of the river. Our final challenge is a 12-kilometer single track and dirt trail ride that winds through local H’mong and Dao communities, cornfields, and lush valleys—ending triumphantly in the quiet mountain town of Bao Lac.

Day 19: Bao Lac – Khau Coc Tra – Cao Bang | Rugged Mountain Passes & Valley Descents into Cao Bang

Today delivers another epic chapter of your Northern Vietnam cycling adventure, as we ride from Bao Lac to Cao Bang via the dramatic highlands of Khau Coc Tra. After a hearty Vietnamese breakfast, we set off energized and ready for challenging climbs, breathtaking panoramas, and immersive backroads cycling.
The day starts with a demanding 12 km ascent up a steep mountain pass. As you climb, the route winds through rugged slopes and towering karst formations, offering sweeping views over deep valleys, terraced rice fields, and remote hillside villages—perfect photo opportunities and a reminder of why this is one of the best cycling routes in Northern Vietnam. After reaching the ridge, we descend into a tranquil village, catching our breath before the next leg. Midday brings sustained undulating terrain: we push through a sequence of long, rewarding hilly passes, threading our way across wild mountain landscapes with elevations that ebb and flow like waves. The route slices through tropical forest groves and bamboo corridors, delivering both shade and serenity before dropping into a dreamlike valley for a picnic lunch surrounded by authentic rural scenery.
Recharged, we climb again to a high vantage point, then roll down toward Thong Nong town. From there, the route follows secondary backroads that gently undulate, guiding you through more local communities and scenic countryside until we arrive in Cao Bang City—the gateway to northeast Vietnam’s natural wonders. Overnight in Cao Bang, where you can relax after a powerful day of off-the-beaten-path cycling in Vietnam.

Day 20: Cao Bang – Ba Be Lake | Cycle to Vietnam’s Largest Freshwater Lake

After a delicious hotel breakfast in Cao Bang, we set off for an unforgettable day of cycling through northeastern Vietnam’s pristine landscapes. Our route begins on a smooth tarmac road heading southwest toward the legendary Ba Be National Park—a hidden gem known for its serene lakes, lush rainforest, and remote ethnic villages.
We start with a pleasant ride across a river bridge before veering off onto a charming paved village road that eventually connects with National Road 209. From here, we follow a scenic riverside route flanked by towering limestone karsts, emerald rice paddies, and peaceful countryside vistas. It’s a perfect stretch for capturing postcard-worthy photos.
After a relaxing lunch en route, we hop back on the bikes and cycle along undulating terrain toward the heart of Ba Be. The final approach is truly magical—gliding past ethnic minority villages and dense forest as the landscape opens up to reveal Ba Be Lake, Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake. Nestled within Ba Be National Park, the lake is surrounded by towering peaks and cloaked in semi-tropical monsoon rainforest. This biodiverse area is home to several ethnic groups, including the Tay, Red Dao, White Hmong, and Co Tu—each with their own unique traditions and customs. We arrive at our peaceful lakeside accommodation and relax for the evening in this tranquil haven of nature and culture.

Our route takes us along peaceful backroads through Quang Khe, Chiem Hoa, and Cho Chu, showcasing some of northern Vietnam’s most scenic lowland terrain. Along the way, we’ll pass vibrant ethnic minority communities, terraced farmlands, fragrant gum trees, and traditional stilt houses surrounded by lush tropical foliage. After lunch in a local village, we bid farewell to our bikes and hop in our comfortable van for the drive back to Hanoi. We arrive in the bustling capital by late afternoon and check into our hotel, nestled in the heart of the Old Quarter. To celebrate the incredible journey we’ve shared, we gather in the evening for a farewell dinner at a local Vietnamese restaurant—filled with laughter, reflection, and the flavors of northern Vietnam. Tonight, we rest in comfort in Hanoi, with memories of an epic cycling expedition through the mountains, valleys, and villages of Vietnam’s far north.
