Day 10: Muang Kham to Phonsavan – Discover the Mysterious Plain of Jars & Laos’ Secret War History

After breakfast at a local restaurant, we set off on our bikes for an easier and more relaxed ride toward Phonsavan, the capital of Xieng Khouang Province. Compared to the last few mountain stages, today’s terrain is much gentler—giving you a well-deserved break from the long climbs of the previous days. The smoother road allows us to cycle at a brisk pace, arriving in Phonsavan around midday in time for lunch.
After checking into our hotel and freshening up, you’ll have time to unwind or explore the town on your own—either by foot or bike. For those interested in history, a visit to the UXO Information Centre is highly recommended. This sobering museum offers powerful insight into Laos’ tragic role in the Indochina War, when the country became the most heavily bombed nation per capita in history. It’s an eye-opening experience and an important part of understanding Laos’ modern-day resilience.
Later in the afternoon, we’ll take a short transfer (8 km) out of town to visit one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Southeast Asia—the Plain of Jars. Scattered across a high plateau, these giant stone jars date back over 2,500 years and remain one of Laos’ greatest mysteries. With over 60 jar sites discovered, only a few have been safely cleared of UXOs (unexploded ordnance) left over from the war, making this one of the most fascinating and poignant stops on our cycling tour of Laos.  Marvel at these massive stone vessels—some as tall as 3 meters—and explore the many legends that surround them. One popular belief is that the jars were used by ancient warriors, possibly by King Khoun Chuang, to store rice wine in celebration of military victories during the 6th century. Others believe they were burial urns or used in prehistoric rituals. Regardless of their origin, the Plain of Jars is a true cultural treasure and a highlight of the tour. Overnight in Phonsavan, a town with a deep and layered history, once a fierce battleground between the communist and royalist factions during the 1960s and 70s.

Day 11: Phonsavan – Cycle & Explore the Mysterious Plain of Jars

Get ready for a truly unforgettable day of cultural discovery and off-the-beaten-path cycling in Laos! Today, we dive deeper into the mystery of the Plain of Jars—one of Southeast Asia’s most enigmatic archaeological wonders. Unlike other ancient sites in the region, the origin, purpose, and construction of these giant stone jars remain a complete mystery to historians and archaeologists alike, adding a sense of awe and intrigue to every visit. After breakfast, we’ll set out on our bikes to explore two of the most captivating jar sites in the region. Located in the beautiful highlands of Xieng Khouang Province, these sites are surrounded by sweeping landscapes, remote villages, and war-scarred countryside, offering a powerful and immersive cycling experience.
Pedaling between sites, you’ll pass through traditional Lao settlements and meet friendly locals along the way. The terrain is relatively gentle, allowing you to fully appreciate the scenery and soak in the atmosphere of this historical land. At each jar site, you’ll have plenty of time to walk among the massive stone vessels—some weighing several tons—and reflect on the legends, including the belief that King Khoun Chuang commissioned them to store wine after his 6th-century victory. These prehistoric megaliths, estimated to be over 2,500 years old, are scattered across multiple sites, but only a few have been cleared of unexploded ordnance (UXO), making our carefully selected routes both safe and historically significant. Their mysterious purpose—burial urns, ceremonial altars, or wine containers—continues to fascinate visitors from around the world. After a day of exploration, we return to Phonsavan, where you’ll have time to relax, reflect, or continue exploring the town. Tonight, we prepare for the next exciting leg of our Laos cycling adventure.

Day 12: Phonsavan – Tha Thom | Cycle Through Hill Tribe Villages and the Forgotten Capital of Xieng Khouang

After breakfast, we leave Phonsavan behind and continue our cycling tour through Northern Laos, heading deep into the mountains and hidden valleys of Xieng Khouang Province. Today’s ride takes us along a newly constructed road connecting Phonsavan to Paksan—a route that has only recently opened up to cyclists, making it one of the most remote and scenic cycling routes in Laos.
Our first major stop is Muang Khoun, the former royal capital of the province and once a bustling cultural center before it was heavily bombed during the Indochina War. The remnants of French colonial buildings, ancient temples, and war-scarred pagodas offer a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the region’s turbulent past. From Muang Khoun, we continue cycling through lush mountain landscapes and vibrant hill tribe villages, home to ethnic groups such as the Hmong and Khmu. You’ll have the chance to stop, interact, and learn about their traditional lifestyles, colorful clothing, and unique customs—an enriching cultural experience few travelers encounter. The ride is a mix of moderate climbs and long, thrilling descents as we roll through dense forests and along river valleys toward our overnight destination: the peaceful town of Tha Thom. Tucked away in a remote corner of Laos, Tha Thom offers a warm welcome, basic comforts, and authentic rural charm. This is a true off-the-beaten-path cycling adventure in Laos, combining cultural encounters, historic exploration, and breathtaking nature. This is a day to soak in the slower pace of rural life, wave at friendly locals, and enjoy the warm breeze as we roll toward the Mekong basin. Arriving in Paksan, we’ll check into our hotel and relax after a rewarding day’s ride.
