Day 07: Khe Sanh – Aluoi

Today’s cycling adventure takes us through the historic and strategic area of Khe Sanh, a key location during the Vietnam War. In an effort to cut off the Ho Chi Minh Trail and prevent the North from sending troops to the South, the US military established a besieged position here. This daring move was aimed at disrupting the People's Liberation Army Vietnam, with the ultimate goal of blocking vital supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Khe Sanh sits in a stunning red soil valley, perched at an elevation of over 400 meters. During the Vietnam War, the area became home to some of the largest and most fortified US military bases along Route 9, including the McNamara Line, which included Khe Sanh, Lang Vay, and Ta Con as strategic "magic eye" points. Khe Sanh was central to some of the most intense battles, particularly during the 1968 Khe Sanh Campaign and the Route 9 – Southern Laos Campaign in 1971. These historic campaigns forever changed the course of the war.
In addition to its military significance, Khe Sanh has been immortalized in pop culture, with its own song dedicated to the hardships faced by Australian troops during the conflict. The song, by the rock band Cold Chisel, captures the essence of the bitter experience of the soldiers stationed here.
Khe Sanh’s legacy has been acknowledged globally, with even President Obama honoring the sacrifice of the men who fought there during his speech on January 20, 2009. Cycling through this iconic site, you’ll feel the weight of its history and its role in the broader context of the Vietnam War.  After learning about the military and cultural history of Khe Sanh, we’ll continue our journey to Aluoi, a peaceful destination surrounded by beautiful landscapes and traditional villages.

Day 20: Kampong Thom to Siem Reap – Ancient Roads & the Lost Temple of Beng Mealea

After a hearty breakfast in Kampong Thom, we hit the road by vehicle for a short transfer to Kompong Kdei, a peaceful town that marks the starting point of today’s memorable cycling adventure. From here, we mount our bikes and begin pedaling through serene Cambodian countryside, passing through charming villages, lush rice paddies, and palm-lined roads. You’ll notice new irrigation systems improving local farming—evidence of Cambodia’s quiet agricultural transformation. Our first stop is the Makak Dam, a vast man-made reservoir constructed during the Khmer Rouge regime. Despite its dark origins, the dam is now an important water source for the region and offers a moment to rest and reflect.Continuing on, we reach Kvao Village, where we turn onto a 700-year-old laterite road, once part of the ancient Angkorian highway system. This road leads us to one of Cambodia’s hidden treasures: Beng Mealea Temple. Overgrown by jungle and partially collapsed, Beng Mealea offers a striking “lost temple” atmosphere—an adventurer’s dream. You’ll have time to explore its sprawling ruins, marvel at tree-covered walls, and capture photos of this mysterious, lesser-known gem of the Angkor temple complex.
From Beng Mealea, we continue riding a short distance to Dam Dek, where our cycling ends for the day. Here, we transfer by vehicle to the bustling and beautiful Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat. Settle in at your hotel, enjoy a delicious dinner, and get ready for your final day of adventure tomorrow.

Today marks the grand finale of your epic cycling adventure—and what better way to finish than by exploring the world-renowned Angkor Archaeological Park on two wheels?
After breakfast, you’ll meet your expert temple guide, who will lead you on an unforgettable bicycle tour through Angkor's Small Circuit—a route packed with Cambodia’s most iconic and awe-inspiring temples.
Your first stop is the towering Takeo Temple, a majestic stepped pyramid carved from sandstone. Next, venture into the hauntingly beautiful Ta Prohm, where giant tree roots entwine with crumbling stone walls—a scene made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.
Pause at the peaceful Sras Srang, known as the King’s bathing pond, before cycling into the heart of Angkor Thom, the former royal capital of the Khmer Empire. Here, you'll discover the Bayon Temple, renowned for its enigmatic towers adorned with more than 200 giant smiling faces. Continue exploring the vast walled city, with highlights like the Elephant Terrace and the Baphuon Temple.
After a well-deserved lunch, your journey culminates with a visit to Angkor Wat—the world’s largest religious monument and Cambodia’s national pride. Wander through its grand galleries, bas-reliefs, and soaring towers as your guide shares the stories and symbolism behind this architectural masterpiece.
Return to your hotel in the late afternoon for a chance to freshen up. Then, gather with your fellow cyclists for a celebratory farewell dinner at a local restaurant in Siem Reap—a perfect way to reflect on the memories, miles, and magic of your 21-day cycling journey from Hanoi to Angkor.
